INTERNATIONAL HOME STUDY AND DOMESTIC HOME STUDY SERVICES
Sunshine International Adoption Agency is licensed by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to complete Home Studies
for families residing in Ohio who plan to adopt internationally or domestically.

If you would like
Sunshine International Adoption Agency to prepare your Home Study, please complete the attached Application
and mail it to us with the applicable fee of $250.  Once we have reviewed your Application, we will forward our “Home Study Guide,”
which will include all the forms you must complete for the Home Study.

Once your Adoption Application has been received and approved, an adoption assessor will be assigned to your family and will work
with you to complete the
Home Study process.  The Home Study process takes approximately two to six months to complete (most
of this depends on the pace of which certain required documents are obtained by you).  During the Home Study process, certain
documents are required to be viewed by your caseworker.  Families will receive notification when their Home Study has been
completed and approved.  Should a Home Study not be approved, the family is encouraged to meet with the caseworker and, if
needed, the agency, to discuss the reasons why the family was not approved and the possible alternative options for the family.

prepare the adoptive family for adoption; to gather specific information about the prospective parents; and to evaluate the adoptive
family for adoption.
The Home Study is a process of education and self-evaluation.  It is a time for your family and the adoption assessor to look at your
readiness to adopt and identify special parenting abilities that you may offer to an adopted child.  The process allows the adoptive
family to look at their family structure and their support system.  During the Home Study, adoptive parents will also explore their
beliefs, attitudes and coping skills.  Your adoption assessor will meet with you and everyone living in your home to discuss coping
skills.  Through a series of group and individual meetings, you will learn more about the type of child(ren) you might best parent.
Topics discussed during the Home Study include your motivation for wanting to adopt, your life experiences and history, your
marriage relationship or single status, your ability to financially support your family, your health and your support system, the
process of completing a Home Study, Sunshine International Adoption Agency Policies, the State of Ohio Policies and the Procedures
of Citizenship and Immigration Services, if applicable.  Adoptive applicants may request a copy of Sunshine International Adoption
Agency Policies, in its entirety by calling us.
WHAT IS A HOME STUDY?
How long will the Home Study process take?

The time it takes to conduct a Home Study varies, but typically takes 2 to 6 months to complete. You can help speed up the process
by completing paperwork, scheduling medical appointments, and gathering the required documents without delay.

How much does a Home Study cost?

The cost of a Home Study depends on what kind of adoption you are pursuing. For domestic infant adoption, international adoption,
or independent adoption, a private agency or certified Social Worker in private practice might charge from $1,000 to $3,000 for the
Home Study. Be sure to discuss any fees thoroughly and ask for this information in writing to avoid any misunderstandings.

What might disqualify our family from adopting?

Aside from a criminal record or overriding safety concerns that would preclude agencies from approving your family under State
laws or policies, characteristics that might disqualify a family in one situation may be seen as strengths in another. Remember,
agencies are not looking for "perfect" families. The Home Study process is a way for a Social Worker to learn more about your real
family, as potential home for real children. Who may adopt varies from agency to agency, State to State, and by the child's country
of origin.
Although the adoption Home Study process may seem invasive or lengthy, it is conducted to help you decide whether adoption is
right for your family, prepare your family for adoption, and help your family determine which type of child you could best parent.
The process also serves to ensure children are placed in loving, caring, healthy, and safe environments.
Flexibility and a sense of humor are vital characteristics when raising children, and can be useful during the Home Study process as
well. With perseverance and a positive outlook, you will be able to team with your Social Worker to make this a valuable learning
experience and one that will help you do the best possible job in parenting the child who will eventually join your family.
